Shweta Tripathi reveals Mirzapur Season 4 is in the writing stage as her journey with Golu continues.

Shweta Tripathi has spent close to a decade living with Gajgamini “Golu” Gupta, and the actor admits she now carries a bias towards the Mirzapur character herself. With Mirzapur – The Movie finding commercial success, Shweta has opened up about what the franchise has meant to her career, why the response feels particularly significant after years of independent cinema, and how she continues to approach Golu despite playing her for nine years.

In a conversation with SCREEN, Shweta said the film has crossed Rs 300 crore worldwide and credited the audience for turning up in large numbers.

Shweta Tripathi Says Mirzapur Has Crossed Rs 300 Crore Worldwide

For Shweta, the most important part of Mirzapur – The Movie’s theatrical run has been seeing audiences actually show up.

“The audience has shown up,” she said, adding that cinema ultimately depends on people choosing to watch it. “Agar audience hi nahi aayegi, toh hum kitni bhi acche cheez bana lein, there’s no point because we are making it for them, to share it with them, to have them watch it.”

Speaking about the film’s box-office performance, she added, “The way the audience has shown up (for Mirzapur). Worldwide, we have crossed Rs 300 crores.”

The scale of the release has also been markedly different from much of Shweta’s earlier filmography. Having worked in films such as Masaan, Haraamkhor and Gone Kesh, she recalled that some of those titles reached only around 100 or 300 theatres.

“Here, Mirzapur was screened on over 4000 screens. And you know, it is important because it feels like a win,” she said.

‘People Everywhere Are Calling Me Golu Didi’

Shweta also reflected on the repeated questions she faced over the years about when she would finally do “commercial cinema”.

“Aap commercial kab karoge, aap commercial kab karoge?” she recalled people asking her.

The question never sat well with her. “Aap kya commercial actor se poochte ho ki festival films kab karoge? Ki aap independent film ko kab support karoge?” she said, questioning why her own choices had to be treated as less important simply because they belonged to independent cinema.

At the same time, Mirzapur has now given her the kind of mainstream reach she had not experienced with several of those films.

“Hum numbers ke peeche itna bhaag jaate hai na, ki wo quality suffer karne lagti hai, which I do not want,” Shweta said. But she admitted that the response to Golu has been impossible to miss.

“Har jagah main jaa rahe hoon, log Golu didi, Golu didi bula rahe hain,” she said.

She also revealed that Mirzapur played to a housefull audience at TIFF in Toronto.

Shweta Tripathi Isn’t Worried About Being Known As Golu

Despite the character becoming strongly associated with her, Shweta said she has no fear of Golu overshadowing her identity as an actor.

She has experienced similar recognition before. After Masaan, viewers identified her as Shalu, while her character from Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein also received considerable affection.

“No, because as an actor, this happened during Masaan also, people would identify me as Shalu,” she said. “If Golu was my debut, then things would be very different.”

Golu, however, occupies a slightly different place for her simply because of how long she has played the role.

“Of course, there is so much fondness for Golu and that should be there because I have been playing Golu for the past nine years,” Shweta said.

She added, “Audience ka kya, mera khud ka bias hota hai. Golu is one of my favourite characters. So there is no denying that.”

Shweta Says Mirzapur Season 4 Is Being Written

The actor also confirmed that her journey with the franchise is far from over.

“Abhi now ek second movie aa rahi hai, season 4 likha jaa raha hai,” she said, adding that her association with Golu will eventually stretch beyond a decade.

“So this journey is going to be a journey of 10 plus years.”

That longevity brings its own acting challenge. Shweta pointed out that while she has aged and changed personally and professionally over the years, Golu’s timeline has moved much more slowly.

“Mirzapur’s journey is of 10 plus years, but for Golu, it may only be a journey of 2 years,” she explained.

For that reason, she considers unlearning particularly important.

“The baggage of what we have gone through, what Shweta has gone through personally and professionally, or the wisdom that I have attained in these years, can’t impact Golu because Golu hasn’t changed,” she said.

There is also a physical challenge. “Aapki age ho gayi hai in 10 years. But Golu ki nahi huyi hai. Golu is still 22 years old,” Shweta said, adding that taking care of both mind and body becomes essential when playing the same character over such a long period.

She also said she deliberately avoids reading too much praise around Mirzapur, including reactions to Season 3.

“Aap Mirzapur season 3 ka bhi dekhoge. Matlab bahut achhi baatein log kehate hain,” she said, before adding that she prefers not to let appreciation “get to my head” and uses that distance to keep herself in check.
