Namit Malhotra’s Big Ramayana Universe Plan: Spin-Offs, Animated Films, Games and More
Fans are eagerly waiting for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, to release in theatres. But what if we told you that there could be much more in store than just the two-part film? Yes, you read that right! Producer Namit Malhotra has hinted at a much bigger vision for the epic, one that could see the world of Ramayana expand into spin-off films, animated projects, TV shows, video games and even theme parks.
Namit Malhotra Unveils Massive Ramayana Universe Plan
At the Telugu pre-release event of Ramayana in Hyderabad on Monday, Namit Malhotra opened up about the larger plans for the franchise and made it clear that the idea was never to tell the story through just one or two movies and then stop. Instead, he wants to create an entire universe around the epic that generations of Indians have grown up hearing about.
Ramayana Movies Are Just The Beginning
Talking about the vision behind the project, Namit said Ramayana was always meant to be much more than a film. He explained that the epic is deeply rooted in Indian culture and has been passed down through generations, making it a story with endless possibilities to explore.
“The idea is not to make one or two movies and stop the journey of Rama. In fact, it is to start this journey. On the back of this movie, we can actually start to open up the different areas of engagement,” he said.
And that’s where things get exciting for fans. If the plans take shape, the two-part film could be only the starting point for a much larger storytelling experience, allowing audiences to explore different characters, stories and aspects of the Ramayana universe.
Spin-Off Films, TV Shows, Games And Theme Parks On The Cards?
Namit Malhotra also unveiled a behind-the-scenes video outlining the larger vision for the franchise. The plans go well beyond cinema, with spin-off projects, origin stories, television shows and animated films among the possibilities.
The video clip showed the message, “The movies are just the beginning,” before teasing potential spin-offs featuring Hanuman, Surpanakha, Jatayu, Indrajit and Angad, hinting at the possibility of exploring their individual stories in the larger Ramayana universe.
But that’s not all! The proposed expansion also includes video games, merchandise ranging from apparel and toys to gadgets and home furnishings, theme park experiences, a Broadway musical adaptation, and virtual reality, augmented reality and metaverse experiences.
In other words, the ambition is to create different ways for audiences to engage with the epic, whether they’re watching a film, playing a game or experiencing the world through immersive attractions.
While these plans point towards a massive expansion, it remains to be seen which projects will move forward and when audiences might get to experience them.
Namit Malhotra Wants Ramayana To Stand Alongside Global Franchises
Drawing comparisons with some of the world’s biggest entertainment franchises, Namit spoke about how properties such as Star Wars, Marvel and DC have built entire universes around their stories and characters.
He believes Ramayana has the potential to offer a similarly expansive experience, rooted in India’s own mythology and cultural heritage.
“When you hear stories about Star Wars, when you hear about Marvel or DC, the idea is that they’ve created what they call a universe. Ramayana is a universe,” he said.
Namit Malhotra also spoke about the effort that went into explaining the scale and significance of the epic to international collaborators. According to him, the story has such a rich world of characters, creatures, costumes, music and art that it doesn’t need to borrow its identity from other franchises.
“Fortunately, you don’t have to take inspiration from anything else,” he said, emphasising the richness of the source material.
For now, fans are waiting to see Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama on the big screen. But if Namit Malhotra’s vision comes to life, this could be only the first chapter of a much bigger journey, one that takes the world of Ramayana far beyond theatres and into games, animation, live entertainment and immersive experiences.
Meanwhile, Ramayana Part One, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, Yash, Sunny Deol and others, will release in theatres on November 5, 2026.
