Samantha Ruth Prabhu Opens Up About Sacred Pregnancy Ritual
Sharing a series of pictures from the ceremony, Samantha wrote about her long-standing respect for Indian traditions and admitted that she did not initially understand the meaning behind every ritual she encountered.
“I have always had a deep respect for our traditions. I may not understand the meaning behind every ritual, but I have always believed that there is something deeper at work… in the sound of a mantra, the energy created through chanting, and the careful way the ancient practices have been passed down through generations,” she wrote.
What is Kalaa Aavarana?
The ceremony Samantha underwent is called Kalaa Aavarana (Sri Kalpam), which she described as a specialised ritual from the Sri Vidya tradition. According to Samantha, the ceremony honours the 94 kalas of Devi and connects them with the seven chakras of the mother-to-be. Sacred water and mantras are used as part of the ritual to cleanse and energise these centres.
Samantha further spoke about the sacred ritual, and added, “What moved me most was the way the mother is seen through this ritual. She is honoured as Devi herself, as the sacred creator through whom another life is taking form. It is a blessing for the child growing within her and also for the woman who is being born into a new version of herself.”
“After the abhishekam, the mother-to-be is seated at the sacred centre of the Sri Chakra Yantram. It is made up of nine aavaranas, which represent different stages of the spiritual journey. At its centre is the bindu, a single point symbolising the source of creation and the presence of Lalita Tripurasundari,” she added.
During the ceremony, the Devi Khadgamala is recited, with the names of deities and divine energies associated with the nine enclosures being chanted. Samantha also spoke about the belief that the mantras and chanting offer a spiritual imprint, or samskaara, to the unborn child even before birth.
“There was something incredibly powerful about sitting there, experiencing all of this while understanding what was being invoked for me and for the baby,” she wrote.
She further added that she entered knowing little about the sacred pregnancy ritual but left feeling ‘deeply blessed and protected.’
