Aamir Khan’s ex-wife and director Kiran Rao has voiced her support for Imran Khan amid the controversy surrounding the actor’s immigration status. The development comes after Mumbai’s Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) issued a notice asking him to leave the country by October 28. Imran, who is an American citizen with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, came under scrutiny after taking part in a Mumbai protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

On Thursday, October 15, Kiran Rao took to her Instagram stories to respond to a post about Imran being asked to leave India following his participation in the protest. She wrote, “Wah, now it’s Mumbai police?” She also reshared another post by an influencer that read, “43 years old. 40 of those years in India. Studied here, worked here, succeeded here, failed here, loved here and fought here.”

Kiran was not the only one to speak out against the notice. Actress Saba Azad, who is in a relationship with Hrithik Roshan, also voiced her disapproval. Reacting to the development, she wrote, “What? This is bulls**t.”

The issue stems from a protest held on October 10, in which Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, took part alongside his girlfriend, Lekha Washington. Organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the demonstration demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Imran and Lekha were among those detained by Mumbai Police during the protest.

The actor also spoke to the media during the protest. He said, “I don’t have demands. I’m here as a citizen, as a person who lives in this city. I’m here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted, why people’s voices are being suppressed.”

Meanwhile, Imran Khan is reportedly planning to contest the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court. According to reports, his legal team is expected to file a petition by Friday or Monday, challenging the directive as “drastic”. They have also argued that the law does not explicitly prohibit Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders from participating in protests.
