Imran Khan’s girlfriend, Lekha Washington, has shared her first post since the actor received a notice from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) to leave India by October 28. Imran, an American citizen with an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, came under scrutiny after being detained in a Mumbai protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Lekha took to Instagram to share a selfie with Imran from the detention van. She captioned the post, “Just 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻.” Imran’s cousin and actor Zayn Khan, who was also detained with the couple, took to the comments section and wrote, “Yall are ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️.” Have a look at the post here:
Previously, Kiran Rao also took to her Instagram stories to respond to a post about Imran being asked to leave India following his detention. She wrote, “Wah, now it’s Mumbai police?” She also reshared another post by an influencer that read, “43 years old. 40 of those years in India. Studied here, worked here, succeeded here, failed here, loved here and fought here.” Actor Saba Azad also reacted to the notice and said, “What? This is bulls**t.”
Meanwhile, Imran Khan is reportedly planning to contest the FRRO notice in the Bombay High Court. According to reports, his legal team is expected to file a petition by Friday or Monday, challenging the directive as “drastic”. They have also argued that the law does not explicitly prohibit Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders from participating in protests.
What Is An OCI Card?
The Overseas Citizenship of India scheme was introduced in 2005 for eligible people of Indian origin who hold foreign citizenship. Despite its name, an OCI card does not confer Indian citizenship or amount to dual citizenship. It provides privileges such as a lifelong, multiple-entry visa to India and specified benefits relating to education, property and professional activities. However, these individuals have another country’s passport and cannot vote in India.
How Is Imran Khan An American Citizen?
He was born in the US to Nuzhat Khan and Anil Pal while they were students there. After his parents separated, Imran moved to Mumbai with his mother when he was around 3 years old.
