Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi recently made headlines after a video of his performance at the Kunjapuri Mela in Uttarakhand went viral. The performance was interrupted by state cabinet minister Subodh Uniyal, who accused the singer of being under the influence of alcohol and lip-syncing on stage during the Navratri celebrations in Tehri district.

Post that, several celebrities including his brother and singer Mika Singh, Kapil Sharma, Rajpal Yadav and others came out in support of Daler Mehndi, stating that he does not consume alcohol, and has been unwell for the past 2 years. Now, Mika Singh has shared another post on social media, demanding Uttarakhand minister Subodh Uniyal apologise to Daler Mehndi over alcohol allegations and for ‘humiliating’ him on stage.

Mika Singh Wants Uttarakhand Minister Subodh Uniyal To Apologise To Daler Mehndi

In his X post shared on October 21, Mika Singh re-shared a video of him clarifying that his brother Daler Mehndi never consumes alcohol. In his message, Mika first thanked all the singers, celebrities, fans and well-wishers for coming out in support of Daler Mehndi.

“Mika wrote, “Sat Sri Akal, everyone! Thank you so much to all the singers from Bollywood to Punjab, fans, friends, family, and well-wishers for your love and support. My point is simple: Daler Mehndi ji does not drink alcohol, and making such allegations against him is completely wrong.”

He further questioned Uttarakhand Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal for publicly reprimanding the singer during his performance.

“आज अगर कोई टीचर स्कूल या कॉलेज में किसी बच्चे को डांटता है, तो भी बड़ा मुद्दा बन जाता है। फिर एक इतने बड़े कलाकार को मंच पर सबके सामने इस तरह डांटना और अपमानित करना कहाँ तक सही है? (“Today, even if a teacher scolds a child in school or college, it becomes a big issue. So, how is it right to scold and humiliate such a renowned artist in front of everyone on stage?) I believe an apology is due. The person responsible should acknowledge that the allegations about Daler Mehndi ji drinking alcohol were wrong and apologise for the way he was treated. Cabinet minister @SubodhUniyal1. Thank you, everyone, for standing with Daler Mehndi ji,” concluded Mika Singh.

What Is The Controversy About?

The controversy erupted after Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi’s performance at the Kunjapuri Fair in Uttarakhand’s Tehri district on October 18, during Navratri celebrations. State Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal walked onto the stage and confronted the singer, alleging that he appeared intoxicated and was lip-syncing instead of singing live.

“There is a Durga Mata programme for Navratri, and you are singing at the event after drinking alcohol, which is not appropriate,” NDTV quoted the minister saying.

He also questioned the singer’s ability to speak clearly. He was heard saying, “Bol toh jaa nahi raha, gaana kya gaoge?” which translates to, “You can’t even speak, so how are you going to sing?”

Later, the minister told ANI that Daler Mehndi was offered Rs 35 lakh for the performance, and he appeared disoriented during the performance.

“Besides this, he was only lip-syncing to his songs. I told him that he is a big artist and he should do justice to his art; he had been offered Rs 35 lakh to come and perform, but he was not even singing. So, I expressed my resentment,” said the minister.

Palash Sen, Harshdeep Kaur, Alisha Chinai, Kapil Sharma, Rajpal Yadav and many other celebrities came out in support of Daler Mehndi amid the controversy.
