Imran Khan, nephew of Aamir Khan, was detained during a Mumbai protest demanding the CEC’s resignation and reportedly issued a notice to leave India.

Imran Khan was recently detained during protests in Mumbai.
Imran Khan, nephew of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, has been asked to leave India following his participation in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. According to Mumbai Police, the action was taken against him under the relevant provision of the Immigration Act.
Who Is Imran Khan?
Imran Khan is one of Bollywood’s most loved actors. Khan is the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and has delivered several films since his debut as a leading man in 2008 with Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na.
Born on January 13, 1983, in Madison, Wisconsin, Imran studied filmmaking at the New York Film Academy before returning to India to pursue acting. With commercial hits including I Hate Luv Storys, Delhi Belly, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, and Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Imran stepped away from mainstream acting in 2015 after doing Katti Batti.
Now, about a decade later, Imran is all set to make his Bollywood comeback with Adhure Hum Adhure Tum. Imran Khan’s return to the big screen has been one of Bollywood’s most talked-about comeback stories.
Why Is He Back in the News?
Imran Khan was detained on October 10 while protesting in Mumbai amid the CJP’s Jantar Mantar protest. Following his detention, the actor took to Instagram to share a picture from inside a police van and wrote, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” Lekha Washington, Imran Khan’s girlfriend, also shared a story, writing, “Romance ho to aisi.”
While he was being detained, Imran addressed the media and said, “Sir, I don’t have any demands. I don’t have any status to demand anything from people. Nor am I a part of any organisation, so I don’t speak as a representative.”
As of October 15, 2026, reports say Imran Khan, who is reportedly a US citizen and an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, has been issued a notice directing him to leave India by October 28.
What Does the Law Say?
While an OCI card gives certain immigration privileges, it does not confer Indian citizenship. However, participating in a protest is not automatically illegal for an OCI cardholder.
An OCI cardholder remains a foreign national. Under Section 7D of the Citizenship Act, OCI registration can be cancelled on specific grounds.
Imran or his lawyers could seek judicial review of the decision. A court would then assess whether the authorities acted within their legal powers and followed the applicable law.
