The weapons allegedly used in the firing incident targeting actor Tiger Shroff in Mumbai were procured through a covert arrangement known as a ‘dead letter box’, with investigators now tracing the network that transported the firearms from Amritsar to Mumbai, police sources said on Wednesday.
A ‘dead letter box’ refers to a pre-arranged location where an item is left for another person to collect, without the two necessarily meeting or knowing each other’s identities.
According to police sources, the weapons were stashed at a location in Amritsar, which was shared in advance with accused Kunal and Sumit by gangster Anil Pandit, the alleged mastermind behind the attack on the actor on Sunday. The two men travelled to Amritsar to collect the weapons but do not know who had originally placed them at the designated spot, sources said.
Pandit allegedly paid Kunal and Sumit between Rs 70,000 and Rs 80,000 for the task. Of this amount, they gave Rs 10,000 to Rs 12,000 to two women, Babita and Radha, who allegedly helped transport the weapons to Mumbai.
HOW THE WEAPONS REACHED MUMBAI
According to police sources, Kunal was released from Sonipat jail in July this year. After his release, a friend introduced him to Pandit, following which the two began communicating through an encrypted messaging application.
Around two weeks ago, Pandit allegedly assigned Kunal the task of collecting weapons from Amritsar and transporting them to Mumbai.
Kunal allegedly roped in his girlfriend, Radha, to act as a courier. Radha and Babita, who work at a factory in Sonipat, subsequently travelled to Mumbai with the weapons at Kunal’s behest, sources said.
Investigators are now examining the alleged roles played by the different individuals in the supply chain, including the person who originally deposited the weapons in Amritsar and the wider network coordinating their movement.
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE TIGER SHROFF FIRING CASE?
The development comes days after three motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at a car carrying Tiger Shroff in Mumbai’s Juhu area on the evening of October 18.
The incident took place near Pushpa Narsee Park, also known as Jamnabai Nursery, as the actor was leaving after playing football. The assailants allegedly fired seven rounds at the vehicle before fleeing on a motorcycle.
Shroff escaped the attack without gunshot injuries, while his driver and a bystander sustained injuries. Investigators have been examining CCTV footage and other evidence to reconstruct the attack and establish the roles of those involved.
Three suspects were subsequently detained in Kota, Rajasthan, in connection with the firing. The investigation has since widened to examine the alleged network that procured and transported the weapons used in the attack.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang has claimed responsibility for the firing in a social media post, and investigators are probing the claim as part of the wider investigation.
