Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 directed by Nelson Dilipkumar recorded the biggest first-Monday collection for a Tamil film, pushing its worldwide gross to Rs 477.75 crore.

Rajinikanth’s latest film is having a pretty great run at the box office, and it isn’t slowing down just yet. Even after a big opening weekend, Jailer 2 continued to bring in crowds on Monday. The film, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar, earned an estimated Rs 49.50 crore in India gross on Monday. This took its worldwide collection to Rs 477.75 crore in just five days, according to trade website Sacnilk. In simple terms, Jailer 2 is now just a little over Rs 22 crore away from the Rs 500-crore mark worldwide.

The film has also set a new record for the biggest first-Monday collection by a Tamil film. The film collected Rs 49.50 crore in India gross on Monday, beating Vijay’s Leo, which had earned Rs 39.50 crore on its first Monday in 2023.

Rajinikanth’s earlier film, Jailer, is third on the list with Rs 27.30 crore. Vijay’s Bigil follows with Rs 22.80 crore, while Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1 comes fifth with Rs 22.35 crore.

The film had its biggest day on opening day, when it collected Rs 59.70 crore net in India from 16,599 shows. Collections dipped to Rs 37.10 crore on Day 2, but picked up over the weekend. In just five days, Jailer 2 has also moved ahead of two other big Indian releases this year, Border 2 and Hanuman Ansh. The film is also climbing the list of the biggest Tamil films ever. Its next targets include Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, which earned Rs 488 crore worldwide, and Coolie, with Rs 518 crore. After that, it could aim for Leo at Rs 605 crore and Jailer at Rs 609 crore.

In Jailer 2, Rajinikanth plays Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, who investigates an idol-smuggling racket. The cast also includes Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah, Ramya Krishnan, Mithun Chakraborty and Suraj Venjaramoodu. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar and Hrithik Roshan appear in guest roles.

Nelson Dilipkumar has written and directed the film. R Nirmal is in charge of editing, Anirudh Ravichander has composed the music, and Vijay Kartik Kannan is the cinematographer.
