Kriti Sanon has spoken about the backlash over her Raksha Bandhan advertisement, revealing that she never expected her outfit to become a subject of prime-time television debates. The actress discussed the controversy on Kareena Kapoor Khan’s What Women Want Season 6 and recalled how much attention her “choli” received.

Speaking to Kareena, Kriti said, “I couldn’t believe… when my choli had become like a 6 people panel discussion on prime-time news.” Kareena reacted, “I know.”

Kriti Sanon on her Raksha Bandhan ad controversy

The controversy began after GIVA released its Raksha Bandhan advertisement featuring Kriti Sanon. In the ad, she wears an Indo-Western outfit while celebrating Raksha Bandhan by tying a Rakhi to her brother and her pet dog.

Some social media users slammed Kriti’s outfit and said it was inappropriate for a traditional festival. Others questioned the way Raksha Bandhan was presented in the advertisement, including the absence of traditional elements and the inclusion of her pet.

Kriti had reacted to the backlash on Instagram and questioned why women are still judged by their clothes. She wrote, “Also, when will we stop telling women what to wear? Ethnic fashion has evolved over the years, yet a woman’s respect for her culture is still measured by her clothes. Culture and traditions are in her heart, not in her neckline!”

Kriti continued the conversation on women and clothing

Kriti later shared more posts about women, clothing and patriarchy. One of the posts she reshared read, “Guys, it’s not Men vs Women,” while criticising patriarchal and misogynistic attitudes. While she did not directly mention the GIVA advertisement in that post, it came during the discussion around the backlash she had received over the campaign.

On September 27, Kriti Sanon also posted about women’s safety and the world daughters deserve. Days later, she shared another post about victim-blaming and clothing. It read, “‘Was it my fault?’ Asked the short skirt. ‘No, it happened to me too,’ replied the Burkha…”

These posts did not directly refer to the advertisement, but they continued the broader conversation around women being judged for their clothes.

The actress pointed out on the chat show that her outfit became the subject of a six-person prime-time news panel, something she clearly did not expect when the advertisement was released.
