Bhuvan Bam Recalls Being Mistaken For A Pickpocket At Sarojini Nagar: ‘Police Took Me By My Collar’
Bhuvan Bam has come a long way since the early days of BB Ki Vines. At the Storyboard18 Global GenZ Summit, the content creator and actor looked back at the time when he had to convince his parents to let him pursue YouTube instead of taking up a regular job. He recalled telling his parents that he wanted just two years to try making something of himself. If it didn’t work out, he promised he would follow whatever they wanted him to do.
In the same conversation, he also recalled being recognised by fans and surrounded by a crowd at Sarojini Nagar, before police stepped in and mistook him for a pickpocket.
Bhuvan Bam On Convincing His Parents
“I had to convince my parents ki nahi bharne mujhe bank ke forms. Mujhe nahi job karni,” Bhuvan recalled. Bhuvan said he reminded his parents that he had spent years following their expectations, from keeping his hair a certain way to dressing formally.
He eventually asked them to give him two years to try something on his own. Fortunately for him, BB Ki Vines started gaining traction. By that point, he had around 600k subscribers on YouTube.
The Sarojini Nagar Incident
One of Bhuvan’s most memorable moments from that phase came when he took his mother to Sarojini Nagar in Delhi. She wanted to shop, and the outing was also a chance for them to spend some time together.
However, things quickly became chaotic when people recognised Bhuvan after he stepped out of the car. What started with a few people soon turned into a large crowd surrounding him.
His mother was confused and worried about why so many people were gathering around them. Things took another unexpected turn when the police arrived and took Bhuvan away by his collar.
Police Thought He Was A Pickpocket
Bhuvan recalled that the police initially suspected him of being involved in a theft. At the time, he had long hair and was often seen wearing a bandana.
“Waha police wale aaye, wo mujhe collar se pakad ke le gaye wo bole ‘Tune jeb maari kisi ki?’ Maine kaha ‘maine jeb nahi maari’. Uss time bohot lambe baal hote the aur main bandana pehen ke ghumta tha. (The police came and took me by my collar. They asked me if I had picked someone’s pocket. I told them I hadn’t. At the time, I had very long hair and used to wear a bandana),” recalled Bhuvan.
He tried explaining that he was a YouTuber and showed the police some of his videos. Meanwhile, the crowd continued calling out his name.
Eventually, the police asked him to leave and go home.
His Mother Finally Saw His Success
The incident, however, ended up becoming a special moment for Bhuvan. As they drove back, he looked at his mother through the rearview mirror and noticed that she was smiling.
For his mother, seeing hundreds of people recognise her son appeared to be the moment when his unconventional career choice finally became real.
Bhuvan said she was extremely happy, making the entire chaotic experience at Sarojini Nagar memorable for both of them.
